Curriculum
Language Arts
We utilize a variety of novels that support the common core standards, the Houghton Mifflin textbook, non-fiction reading, and the science and social studies curriculum. Students learn how to write multi-paragraph essays in three genres: narrative, informative/explanatory writing, and persuasive/opinion writing. In addition, the students will learn report writing and writing is practiced in all content areas.
Mathematics
Our math program is Eureka Math (aka EngageNY). In grade 5, we focus on three critical areas: (1) developing fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions, and developing understanding of the multiplication of fractions and of division of fractions in limited cases (unit fractions divided by whole numbers and whole numbers divided by unit fractions); (2) extending division to 2-digit divisors, integrating decimal fractions into the place value system and developing understanding of operations with decimals to hundredths, and developing fluency with whole number and decimal operations; and (3) developing understanding of volume.
Science
Our science program is the hands-on program provided by FOSS (NGSS). Students will learn three units: Earth and Sun, Mixtures and Solutions, and Living Systems.
Social Studies
The focus of history for fifth grade deals with US History. We cover material from Pre-Columbian times through the mid 1800s. We also study the 50 states and capitals for geography.
Technology
Students have one-to-one technology in all fifth grade classes. Each student is assigned a chromebook and complete common sense media curriculum. Students use Google drive to complete many assignments and submit via Google Classroom.
Physical Education
We have PE weekly every Monday and also run laps on a daily basis in preparation for the 5th grade mile run. We work on specific sports skills, physical conditioning, and sportsmanship. Tennis shoes are highly recommended. If your child is not physically able to run the 3-5 laps, a parent note will allow a child to walk instead of run. A doctor's note must be provided in order for a student to not walk.
